Emissions of nitrogen dioxide from diesel engines are responsible for the premature death of 6,000 people in Germany only in 2014, according to an official report published today.

This is another blow to car manufacturers who are already shaken by a court decision that the cities can prohibit the use of diesel cars, reports AFP.

Significant increase in the risk of nitrogen dioxide in the air comes from diesel engines, even in cases of low traffic roads. We must do everything to preserve a clean and healthy air - said Maria Krautzberger, who was leader of the study of the German Environment Agency.

According to the study, the root cause of cardiovascular disease at 6,000 deaths may be in diesel emissions from pollutants. Also, it is believed that harmful gases have contributed to increased number of diseases such as diabetes, hypertension and asthma.

Nearly 437,000 people with diabetes, and 439,000 asthma sufferers are affected by air pollution. Almost 70 German cities, including Munich, Stuttgart and Keln, recorded higher levels of nitrogen oxide in the air last year.
