Despića house is a city museum and the first private theater in Bosnia and Herzegovina. It used to be the house of Makso Despić, who was a very progressive and modern man, and he acquired his wide education on his travels around the world. The Despić family was a rich trading and craftsman's family, and they had their peak during the Ottoman period, trading fur from around the world. The house testifies to the culture of living of a Serbian civilian family in Sarajevo. The oldest parts of the house dates  from the 17th century. On the ground floor there are noticeable oriental influences, and the western ones are most noticeable on the later upgraded floors.

Under these influences, the first private theater performances in BiH were played. The family organized them for friends, relatives, business partners and diplomats. The house was the center of the cultural and entertaining life of the city. The actors were the mainly teachers, and urban intellectuals gladly accepted the roles. They mostly performed comedies, and after the performance, they remained at a party and dance with the piano, which was also a novelty in Sarajevo.

The authenticity of the house is preserved thanks to the last descendant of this prominent family, who left Sarajevo in 1967. He gave the house and furniture to the city, and his desire to make the house a museum that shows the culture and life of civilian families in Sarajevo has been realized. Famous family Despic has always been generous to fellow citizens.

Makso Despic, the founder of the theater, was also remembered by his will, in which he ordered that part of his wealth is shared with the poor of all there ligions that then lived in Sarajevo. He turned down the old customs that followed the burial ceremony, during his lifetime he ordered a coffin without any decorations, " we are all equal and nobody carries anything there." Also, he did not allow citizens to come to the family for condolences after death, and forbit the mourners from wearing black clothes.

Makso's will is very interesting to tourists, and is exposed in the lobby of the house, located in Despićeva Street 2, not far from Latinska ćuprija, in the old part of the city. It is open on weekdays from 10 am to 6 pm and Saturday from 10 am to 3 pm.
