Jahorina is the mountain range to the southeast of Sarajevo. Its ideal geographical position more or less guarantees three to four months of good ski snow.

Its highest peak reaches 1,910m. The ski lifts climb to 1,894m with fabulous views towards Sarajevo. The slopes of Jahorina are covered in tall pines till about the 1,500m mark.

From there the mountainside is relatively bare with some thick patches of klek, a high-altitude pine that doesn't grow higher than 2m.

Jahorina is easily accessible via two routes. The Sarajevo-Pale road is a 20 minute drive and from Pale the ride to the top takes another 20 minutes.

Alternatively, from the airport you travel southeast before taking a left towards Lukavica. This road climbs, winds and meanders all the way to Jahorina via Trebevic Mountain, overlooking the city of Sarajevo. It is one road all the way up and very straight forward once you start the climb.

The Trebevic road is considerably longer than the Pale route. During the winter months it could take an hour to reach Jahorina. However, it is by far the most attractive road, with stunning views of the city.

This north face mountain was home to many of the competitions of the 1984 Winter Olympic Games. Jahorina is the largest ski area in the country.

It has 8 ski- lifts and over 20 kilometers of pistes all over the mountain that offer Olympic-style professional trails and novice trails for children and beginners. The high season on Jahorina is mid-December to late January. Around the New year it is almost impossible to get accommodation without advance reservations. An alternative for last-minute travelers is to book a hotel in Sarajevo, then drive to Jahorina as it is only about 45 minutes from town.

On the mountain you will find the full range of facilities including anindoor swimming pool, medical centre, information centres, ski rentals, restaurants and café's, skiing instruction in English and internet access. One advantage to skiing in Bosnia, whether on Jahorina, Bjelasnica or Vlasic, is the incredibly low cost of just about anything. T

he basics are provided and the skiing is, well, good enough for the Olympics! A one-day ski pass costs 30 KM, 6-day ski pass costs 160 KM. For more information visit www.oc-jahorina.com
