Konjic: A town completely surrounded by natural beauty

Konjic is attractive far more by its abundance of natural beauty that completely surrounds the town. The Neretva River running through the centre and Prenj Mountain hovering behind dominate Konjic.

The old town is quite nice to stroll through. The center of town is rather pleasant too, with stunning views in every direction. The main street is often closed to vehicle traffic and is filled with the young and old walking, hanging out in café's or selling their wares along the riverside markets. People in Konjic are very easy going and friendly so feel free to ask someone for directions or to engage in some small talk. One of the not-to-be-missed attractions is certainly Kamena cuprija (Stone Bridge) built in 1682. It was destroyed during World War II, but was rebuilt in 2009. Since the early 1900s, Konjic has come to be known for its woodcarvers. The craft developed a commercial dimension during the Austro-Hungarian occupation in the early 20th century. Before World War II Konjic had a couple of dozen woodcarving businesses, who sold their elaborately-carved heirloom furniture and boxes within the Austro- Hungarian empire and beyond.

The Niksic family is one of the few families left that continue to pass on the family trade from father to son since 1927. They have two shops located next to each other on 2 Varda Street: Brothers Niksic and Rukotvorine. Their work is mainly done in European walnut, cherry, and maple wood. Most of their products are custom-made to order. In 2006, their furniture was defined as movable heritage of Bosnia and Herzegovina. More information is available atwww.bracaniksic.com and www.rukotvorine.comThe Mulic family is another family who has a long tradition in woodcarving. Their company „Mulicev Rekord“ was established in 1929 by Ismail Mulic. The lower storey of the house was turned into a museum in 1955. You can find more information about the company, their products and the museum at www.drvorezbarstvo.com.
The epicenter of the Konjic tourism offer
is most certainly the area around Boracko Lake and the valley of Glaveticevo. This partial glacier lake has bungalows, a hotel and camping facilities. Most of the outdoor activities begin from this region: hiking, camping, rafting, kayaking, village tourism, canoeing, mountain biking and even paragliding.

BORACKO LAKE

Real adventure awaits you over the mountaintop near Boracko Lake. To get there, just follow the signs for 'rafting' up the long and winding mountain road.

It takes about half an hour to travel up and over the mountain. Boracko Glacier Lake is snuggled in between Prenj, Bjelasnica and Visocica mountains. The lake is open to the public for camping, swimming and BBQs. The best spot is across the lake by the restaurant where you will find a great freshwater stream and plenty of shade. Entry to the lake costs 2 KM (summer season 2010).

Konjic nests on the Neretva River surrounded by Prenj, Bjelasnica and Bitovnja mountains.

In addition to the Repovacka Mosque and Orthodox Church, you can visit a Franciscan Monastery built in the 16th century. The Monastery has a library and a gallery and is open for visits.

The Neretva River, dominating the city, is excellent for rafting. A 23 km long rafting trail with stunning cascades and waterfalls stretches from Glavaticevo to the Dzajici Village, 4 km from Konjic. Fishing season on Neretva River is open from April to November. For more information contact the fishing clubs in the area.
Boracko Lake has several accommodation facilities, camping sites and great sport grounds. Fishing season at Boracko Lake is open from March to October.

In the area of Konjic you will also find over 5000 medieval tombstones (stecak). Some are found in the Lukomir Village (Bjelasnica Mt.). The village of Lukomir is the highest and most isolated village in the country (1,500 m). It is known for its traditional attire, mouth-watering organic food and magnificent hiking. The village can be reached from the direction of Sarajevo as well.

Museum and Gallery of the Franciscan Monastery in Konjic displays a permanent exhibition of art works, sculptures, ethno collection and a collection of artefacts made in metal.

The Monastery was ruined in the 16th century when most of the artefacts and art works were destroyed, but it still owns the original sculpture of St. Katarina. Visits to the Monastery by appointment:

Museum of woodcarving „Mulicev Rekord“ has nine rooms showing unique wooden furniture with magnificent carving shapes. The furniture is mainly done in cherry, walnut and maple wood. The museum is enlisted on the UNESCO list (cultural heritage). The museum is located in the lower storey of the Mulic family house, on 60 Varda Street, next to the Varda Mosque (Vardacka dzamija). Titov bunker
Bunker ARK - Nuclear War Headquarters (military name "D-O"), located near Konjic, inside a hill, right under Zlatar mountain, was built by JNA (Yugoslav People's Army) on 6,500 m² area.

Located 280 meters underground bunker was built with aim to function, in case of (nuclear) war, as a Military Operations Center (Supreme Command Staff shelter) and a shelter for President Tito, his family and closest associates.

This facility, that reminds of labyrinth, with more than hundreed rooms and fully preserved inventory (that consists of numerous residential areas, conference rooms, offices and "presidential bloc"), was supposed to provide normal living conditions for 350 people for six months. Until 90's construction (which lasted 1953-1979, and for which 4,6 billion US dollars were invested) and the wary existance of this bunker were most strictly kept top military secret.
