Establishment of the cultural heritage protection service in Sarajevo area began in 1963 by establishing the Baščaršija Maintenance Fund. Following the abolition of the Fund, the City Council for the Protection and Decoration of Cultural Monuments was established by the City Council of the City of Sarajevo in 1965. In the decades that come it was into a well-organized and modernly equipped specialist institution that records significant results in protection and renewal of the monumental fund. Until 1977, the head of this institution was ing.arh. Alija Bejtić, and in the next period, the directors of the Institute were Stevan Borozan, Emir Zečević, Dženana Gološ, Valida Čelić-Ćemerlić and Munib Buljina.
The Cantonal Institute for the Protection of Cultural, Historical and Natural Heritage Sarajevo takes over the entire cultural-historical and natural heritage of Sarajevo Canton.
Director of the Institute at the moment is Nervin Dacić, dipl.ing.arh.
