The Historical Archive of Sarajevo is an important institution for keeping valuable documents of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s cultural heritage. These documents are processed, given to users and occasionally exhibited. This institution has habdproblems with space to keep these materials since it was founded in 1948. In order to protect the oldest documents, many of them are bigitized, for example the oldest maps of Bosnia and Herzegovina and plans of Sarajevo.
The Archive of Sarajevo started working soon after it was formed on May 3, 1948 by decision of the National Committee of Sarajevo. At first, it was just Sarajevo’s archive, but later it gradually transformed into the regional archive institution (en- compassing 10 city and numerous exter- nal districts). When it was founded, it was situated in two smaller attic rooms (40 m2) in the building of the City Hall (National Library of Bosnia and Herzegovina). Work of the institution was accompanied by narrow and inadequate space and other problems. The employees mostly searched for, collected and registered materials from around the city.
