How Nemanja and Adam became nomads

Nemanja Lendić and Adam Dewberry presented their incredible story at a presentation held in Sarajevo Networks. These two young men have shown that with little money, but with much will can visit and meet the world,  other civilizations and culture.

Nemanja Lendić is a 25-year-old history student from Bosanska Gradiska, a cyclist, a hitchiker, and in recent years a nomad. His travels began in 2015 when he went to Greece by bicycle. For the past six months he has been pedaling through 14 countries, two continents, and has crossed over 10,150 kilometers.

He says his goal was to Tokyo, but he did not arrive there. In Kazakhstan he changed the planned route. There were a total of 173 nights spent on his  trip, of which, according to his estimate, 120 were arranged through social networks, via "couch surfing" and a special group for cyclists called "warm showers" . He liked Romania the least, where finding accommodation found very difficult.

"Romania was terrible. The drivers are bad and rude, and truck drivers are looking for ways to kill a cyclists. The state is really out of the context of every European story. "

From Romania, the he traveled to Turkey by the coast of Black Sea. He says the journey to Istanbul was the hardest due to collisions, but he was delighted upon arrival.

"Turkey is a real adventure. Culture is unbelievable. People are great, really good hosts. Wherever I come, they offer tea, food, bed. I spent a month there for just 50 euros. "

He warmly recommends Istanbul to everyone.

"In Istanbul I met a man, Turk, who asked me in a fluent Bosnian if I need accommodation. He took me to his five-star hotel in the city center. Really incredible hosts. " Nemanja tells us.

The jokes about Russia are true

He was filmed by TV1  Istanbul as part of a documentary about cycling. He says he was a real attraction and everyone wanted a picture with him. Still, the most beautiful city is Safranbolu, he says.

"Named after the spice saffron. It's a beautiful city where nothing has changed, everything is the way it was originally made. The industrial part of the city is completely separated from the rest. "

Along with Romania, as the worst country he had gone through stands Grusia. He says he was there forabout ten days, and the traffic is terrible.

"It's a very depressing state. That was the first time I felt  like a complete stranger somewhere. "

He climbed to the Caucasus, and the climb lasted for three days. For the descent of 110 kilometers it took him five hours.

He says that every joke about Russia is true. On the border he was detained for three hours, questioned, searched for a visa, officers wondered why he was there with a bike. In the end, his phone was scanned on a laptop, looking for evidence of his trip.

He also liked Chechnya. He says it's a great country, beautifully decorated and clean, with excellent roads. "Plastic", outdoor, public toilets are on every corner.

"In the capital of Chechnya I thought I was in Morocco. There is no asphalt, the roads are made of marble, and the buildings are extremely illuminated. And their cars are very beautiful."

He also visited Kiev, where he received a donation in the form of an expedition to Chernobyl. After that, he went through Poland, Vienna and Bratislava, and was hit by a car in Balaton. His bike was completely destroyed. After that, his friends came to Bjelovar to pick him up.

Hitchhiked to Sarajevo

He says that he's not gonna stop. Since he came back from his six-month journey, he's been visiting the "not so famous" attractions Bosnia and Herzegovina.

"I'm traveling through Bosnia by hitchhiking. I want my stories and travels to work on the promotion of the state. It's not just Baščaršija and the Old Bridge, we have a lot more to show. "

Adam Dewberry is a 25-year London quantum physics engineer, hiker and nomad. The first time he traveled out of London was when he was twenty years old. With friends he toured Europe by train, via InterRail. He liked it and wanted to continue to travel.

He traveled to Sweden for the first time completely alone. None of his friends wanted to go with him. When he graduated from college, he found a job in Australia. There he wanted to work, but also to dedicate himself to his new love: travels. In just three days in Australia he has gone over 2,500 kilometers. He says Australia is special because of its rainforests and diversities - large and small towns, villages, and diving.  After that, he traveled to Spain, where in three days he walked 70 kilometers. While visiting a remote Spanish village, he met a woman who walked him through the village, gave him accommodation, fed him ... He says that in his travels someone always  "adopts" and keep an eye on him.

"People are really good. They will help you if you ask them, sometimes even if you do not ask. I learned that the more you agree to new adventures and the unknown things, the more you discover. I travel by hitchhiking. Only once nobody would stop to pick me up. There is always someone, you just need to have patience and be prepared to wait "

He came to Sarajevo by hitchhiking from Ljubljana, and at one point even police drove him.

Initially, he had a budget of about $ 30 a day. He says he is now down to 3 KM per day, he eats a lot of garlic for health, and fat for energy.

"This is the worst condition I've ever had on traveling. It is very difficult to find transport, accommodation and food. Summer is much easier because I wear a tent, which I can place anywhere. I discovered that the cemeteries are great for tents. In the night everybody is  afraid of them  and no one comes there, I can sleep peacefully. "

His scariest experience was when he placed his tent  in a forest near a city he was visiting. He did not know that it was the bear season, and soon after he was down, he heard the twist of twigs and terrible sounds. He sent his coordinates to  friends and said that, if they don't hear from him in half an hour, they need to send someone. The bear's attack, he says, was avoided by sitting motionless for twenty minutes, trying even not to breathe.

He also visited Ukraine. There he planned to stay three weeks, but in the end he stayed three months. He applied for a visit to the war zone, but does not know how it got approved. He says, everybody there asked him if he was a spy. Nobody wanted to take him to the war zone, and when he finally found someone, he was arrested at the border. The examination was like in a movie, very precise and detailed. Eventually, they looked through all his stuff, scanned the phone, but they let him go. He says the city in the war zone was unexpectedly beautiful, but "as soon as you leave the center you see all the consequences of the conflict, the ruined houses and the buildings."

Nemanja and Adam are currently traveling together through Bosnia and Herzegovina. The funds are collected by holding lectures about their travels in different cities, on which they collect donations. We just listened to their story in Sarajevo, from where they went to Mostar. Who knows where will they end up?!
