Drava is today, as much as it affects the coast, naturally preserved river and every day it is different. It changes the direction, so it brings and shifts the golden beads from one reef to another.

On the pebble reefs of Drava and Mura, in the green and the gentle Međimurje, gold was once founded! The grains and leafs of precious metal water brought from the Alps, and the farmers here sought them among the sand grains, persistently and painstakingly, in their desire to enrich or at least fill their home budget. The concession for gold flushing on the banks of the two rivers in width of three meters was given by the emperor Marija Terezija in 1776. It was a trade that had been carried for generations until the second half of last century, and then Hydropower was built on Drava, shores were established and soils were formed, and the river in this unnatural state was less and less eroded and meanders, which resulted in missing springs and Sandy shores, as well as commercial jewelery. Today, gold is only flourished by rare tourists and lives in the memory of those who have lived their lives by searching for gold or were fortunate to be the last generation of scientists of that art.

“You could earn good money, but it was far from being enriched, "says Matija Horvat (94) from Donji Vidovac, the oldest living founder of gold in Europe, and perhaps even wider. With his colleague, over fifty years, he poured tons of sand and water over his hand and took out only three kilos of gold because the Drava was not rich in gold. But it was one of the most natural and cleanest in the world, with 24 cards. Gram of such gold is worth about 230 kunas today.

From the earliest childhood to the river, Matija watched how the river flushed gold, and at fifteen years he started to learn about it. He still remembers his first found at St. Martin on Mura: "We came here with horses and just as we started to work,  Mura grew and we had to wait for a few days for the water to fall and to ground to dry."

For three years he was an assistant, the boss would earn two, and Matija one dinar. He bought a tool - a large gold plank, a jar, a gold platter, and a gold box - and he was eighteen years old.

'It was a tough job! We did not have boots, we would work barefoot, and the water was a freezing. For the ball of pure gold it took three weeks to rinse. First, one should pay attention to the water because the gold does not float neither too high or too low. Then it was necessary to determine whether it was reasonable to keep workin the at that springs at all, "Matija explains, because if there are less than 20 grain of gold on the shovel, the effort is futile. On a large board, the pebble is then mixed with gold. The bigger the stones are washed out, and the sandy gold remains on the small board. The shallow bowl is plunged into the water and needs to be careful as a fine mechanic, so separate the golden grain from the sand. The gold of Drava is small, from 0.2 to 0.8 millimeters, so it is difficult to discern it in sand or gravel. 'We would only find gram of gold a day, and in grams there are about ten thousand grains. After the cleansing, the beads would pour into the bowl of the living which would pick up the gold. We put the mixture in a linen cloth tied with a spatula that would squeeze half the grains. Then we put it on fire. Mercury would evaporate, the sand would have gone away, and the gold that would remain is weighed. "says Matija.

Most of the goldsmiths, two hundred on one hundred boats, Matija said, came from his village, where there was also a redeeming station. There were eight in Holy Mary, in Donja Dubrava twenty ...

"We sailed up and down by the Drava, upstream to Maribor, downstream to Pitomača and often fed mosquitoes. We were in the field for ten days, carrying small amounts of food, sleeping under a tomb in the bush. Usually it went in the spring. One year, we were hot in the tent, and we did not know why. We open it, and that part of the tent under the snow, " the goldsmith recalls.

We wondered if the women are doing this job too. And no, it's a tough job, he repeats, not suitable for a woman.

In the twenties of the last century, American engineers have been exploring and excavating the Mura and Drava coasts for three years to conclude that gold is not enough profitable for exploitation. The England and Slovenia were seriously interested in the real industry, but they gave up because after research they concluded that their job would not be paid.

Drava today, as much as it affects the coast, is naturally preserved river and every day it looks different. It changes the direction, so it brings and shifts the golden beads from one spike to another. There is, however, not that much amount of gold that would guarantee the inspiration for the profits, but the six century long tradition of goldsmithing on Drava and Mura, thinking about it in the Tourist Association of Međimurje County, could certainly turn into a first-rate tourist product.
