April 6th Awards presented at Sarajevo City Hall

Mayor of Sarajevo Abdulah Skaka and the City Council Chairman Igor Gavrić presented the  'April 6th Awards' to several deserving organizations and individuals at the Sarajevo City Hall on Saturday evening on the occasion of the Day of the City. 

In the field of culture and arts, the April the 6th Award for 2019 was presented to professor Franjo Topić, PhD, and in the category of health and social welfare, the award went to professor Fahrudin Smajlović, PhD.

Bogić Bogićević received the April 6th Award in the field of work and creativity.

The "Honorary Citizen of the City of Sarajevo" award was presented to of the most renowned contemporary artists in the world and a proven friend of the capital of BiH, maestro Michelangelo Pistoletto, to actress Mirjana Karanović, the US Congressman Chris Smith, opera singer Krunoslav Cigoj (posthumously) and to the frontman of Iron Maiden, Bruce Dickinson.

The plaques of the "City of Sarajevo" were awarded to Sadeta Dervišević, to the author of the film "Keli", Muhamed Brkić, to Ivo Štandeker (posthumously) and to professor Jasmin Džindo (posthumously), while the Graham Bamford Prize was awarded to the founder of Pomozi.ba charity, Elvir Karalić.

The laureates thanked the councilors of the City Council of Sarajevo for the recognition, emphasizing that the awards received are an honor and an incentive for further work.

Mayor of Sarajevo Abdulah Skaka said that April 6 as a date, undoubtedly, has been one of the most important dates in the history of the city, a symbol of the perpetual struggle of Sarajevo and its inhabitants for the true human values.

"The citizens of Sarajevo in the most difficult of times have always been on the right side of history, on the side of truth and democracy, human rights and freedoms. That is how it is today, and it will remain so in the future," Skaka said.

Mayor Skaka concluded his address by saying that learning about the past and creating the present means building the future.

Chairman of the Sarajevo City Council, Igor Gavrić reminded the guests and dignitaries of the tremendous history of Sarajevo, pointing out that April 6 as a date is very unique in many ways.

"It was the day of the beginning of the siege of the city, the day of the occupation and the day of liberation; it is the day which the Sarajevans consecrated with their blood," said Gavrić.

A number of officials, representatives of the executive and legislative authorities, the international community and the diplomatic corps, as well as friends and guests from partner and sister cities, attended the solemn program of the marking of April 6, the City of Sarajevo Day held at the City Hall.
