River Janj rises to 650 meters above sea level in the village of Babići, near Šipovo, and covers a distance of 15 kilometers. It is a small river , but it has inflowing river Vaganac. The state protected Janjske islands declaring them a natural reserve. Four kilometers from the source of the river Janjske resort islands, with a restaurant and holiday apartments, as well as souvenir shops.
Beautiful river Janj is rich in trout and grayling, which are served in the nearby restaurants, and fishermen can taste their luck on the river too. On the island there are old mills, where people used to grind wheat and corn. River Janj is emerald green and reminiscent of the river Una, but is significantly colder so that even to the bravest swimmers is difficult to decide to swim. Resort can be reached by car. People are very accessible, so the locals let us pass over their private estates to come to an incredibly beautiful canyon twenty meters deep.
Walking through the dense forest through the canyon we noticed the karst terrain, and in some places above the canyon turbulent river feared us with the roar of its rapids. After deep and steep canyon, a few kilometers from the mouth of the Janj river, and its waterfall, it becomes a peaceful river.
Janjske islands is often misunderstood as if they were islands in the river, but this is incorrect. Name Janjske islands represents a large number of "leakage" of water that eventually gathered in the canyon of the lamb. Otherwise, river Janj the right tributary to river Pliva.
PERFECT VACATION
This area, untouched by civilization and free from garbage, is also special because there it no signal on your cell phone, and there are no “Free Wi-Fi” signs in restaurants , which makes Janjske islands perfect for a break from work and city bustle. While locals complain that they do not invest in this beautiful area, we think it is better to leave it this way because if civilization stepped foot here, it will all be destroyed, and right now you can dring water from Janja almost its entire course.
