The Saburina House in Sarajevo, a national monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina, thanks to the Stari Grad municipality, will be open for the visitors as of this week for all those wanting to see this unique example of Bosnian residential architecture.

The house is nearly 300 years old, and it speaks volumes about the former culture of housing with its meaningful interior decorations and exterior concept. Additional charm of the house is in the garden with the orchard and the position itself in one of the lovely traditional neighborhoods of Sarajevo’s old town.

The male part of the house known as ‘selamluk’ has been preserved, and also the ‘haremluk’, a female part, which has been partly transferred at the beginning of the 20th century to the Ethnography Department of the National Museum.

At the end of the last war in Sarajevo, the house was in a deteriorating condition, but it was not destroyed, so all the authentic elements have been preserved thanks to the efforts of the Stari Grad Municipality.

The family whose name the house carries was the family of distinguished Sarajevo merchants. The street itself – Saburina, carries the family’s name, in today's Stari Grad Municipality.

Mayor of Stari Grad Municipality Ibrahim Hadžibajrić announcing this week’s project "Open Door Days of the Saburina House" told reporters that they are thinking about the best ways and the future accessibility for the visitors of this fantastic example of residential architecture from the 18th century.

Although it has been declared a national monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina since 2006, the house has not been in the care of the state, but only the municipality of Stari Grad, stressed Hadžibajrić.
