THE CULTURE OF WINE MAKING IN HERZEGOVINA

Herzegovina has a long tradition of wine growing, dating back to the Illyrian times. The hot and dry climate favors the cultivation of grapes, herbs and developing renowned beekeeping. All these elements contributed to a widespread culture of wine and other alcoholic beverages, and this development strongly and proudly continues.

Dubrava and Brotnja zones are the heart of local wine and it is hard to find someone local that does not own a vineyard and does not produce wine for their own purposes and for sale. The best known varieties are Žilavka (white grape) and Blatina (black grapes), and the wines made from this grape are named after these grapes, white – has an irreplaceable smell and black – very strong and very rich.

Stone wine, especially white wine, is another "grape nectar", among the most famous in this area. In recent years, some farmers have successfully produced a variety Chardonnay in their vineyards. In addition to wine, Herzegovina produces excellent rakija too, known as lozovača or loza, with the strenght between 30 and 55 degrees. These two types of spirits are particularly appreciated, and another famous drink is brandy, which is obtained by mixing rakija  with herbs and honey or honey alone.

Herzegovina Wine Route, a project of the Tourist Board of Herzegovina canton, is supported by the European Commission in BiH, and has united producers, caterers and local tour operators and represents, and this a great opportunity for all those who wish to learn about wine and food, natural and historical heritage of this region. Open cellars, tastings of typical products and visits to places of historical importance are just some of the possibilities offered by this "tasty" journey through the flavors Herzegovina.
