The Neretva Valley is one of the most beautiful and picturesque parts of Croatia, and is the only Croatian delta and contains the largest and most valuable remains of Mediterranean swamps on the eastern Adriatic coast and is one of the few such areas left in Europe. The entire delta area is foreseen for protection in the nature park category. Of the twelve twigs, which are stinging at delta, there are only four left today. A part of the associated wetland areas, lakes and lagoons has disappeared, but in this cultivated area, the remains of the once unique Mediterranean marshes have been preserved. Five localities, with a total area of 1,620 ha, are protected in the ornithological reserve categories.
Neretva Valley is an important agricultural land where citrus fruits are predominantly grown (4000 tons of oranges per year are produced) followed by watermelons, plums ... Tomatoes, salads, cucumbers, etc. are also grown. It is also important for olive growing. Bird hunting has been a part of the past and it has been one of the main activities of the elderly who have developed special skills that are still used today (quivering). Due to the delightful views and the interest that Delta carries, every year more and more tourists come to this area.
In the Neretva Delta, there are as many as 310 species of birds, 115 of which are nestling, and Metković has the second largest ornithological collection in Europe. The number of birds has decreased today, but the number of species is still great and valuable. Given the quantity of species and the importance of the delta for migrating and swarming of birds, this space is of international importance. Thanks to the preserved and untouched nature in the Neretva area, a special ecotourism and photo tours are available,, offering unique excursions to traditional Neretva quays.
